This Week's Jazz and Blues (July 7 - 13)

Paul and Nick at the Big BangAt Freud this week, you can catch Alex Hawkins on the Jazz Piano, Neil Mason on the Spanish Guitar, and the Karl Demata Blues Duo. The Bullingdon Arms has the Saiichi Sugiyama Band (Japanese electric and acoustic blues-rock guitarist and Fender and Gibson maestro) on their famous Monday Blues night and Live Jazz with Alvin Roy. The Oxford Folk Club is hosting Home Territory, a bluegrass band. Orphy Robinson and Pat Thomas play the Spin at the Wheatsheaf. The Old Parsonage has Tim Dawes with Ian Ellis (Sax) and Tim Lapthorn (Piano). Gee's Restaurant has Georgia Mancio with Tim Dawes and Tim Lapthorn. And The Big Bang Restaurant has Martin James (piano) and Paul Jefferies (double bass).

This Week's Classical Music (July 7 - 13)

Charivari AgreableSummer is a wonderful time for music in Oxford and nearby. This weekend is the Cornbury Music Festival at Cornbury Park in Charlbury, near Oxford. For tickets and event information, click here. This week at the Jacqueline Du Pre Music Building is Liebesschmerzen - Schumann / Brahms performed by Daniel Turner, and Oxford Philomusica's Mainly Mozart Festival. Exeter College is hosting three nights of Charivari Agreable performances - The Three Countertenors, A Sweet Concord of Winds, and Mozart's Keyboard Heritage. The Holywell Music Room has the Music in Touch Charity Concert, The Holywell Ensemble - From Armenia to Argentina, and the next installment in the Oxford Jazz Master Series - George Haslam. Queen's College has the City of Oxford Choir performing The Call of Nature. And lastly, Magdalen College is the new, temporary venue for this week's Sunday Coffee Concert - 4 Piano Quartet.

What's in the Theatre this week? (July 7 - 13)

MacbethSummer is a great time for theatre in Oxford. In addition to the shows that run at the regular theatres, there are the outdoor plays in the gardens of the various colleges, and now at the new venue - the Oxford castle. Showing this week: The Oxford Playhouse is running Something Dark, Blonde Eckbert, and The Constant Prince; The Creation Theatre Company continues their run of Macbeth at the Headington Hill Park and is also performing The Merchant of Venice at the Oxford Castle; The New Theatre is showing The Jungle Book, The Wiggles, Clare Teal, and Roll Out The Barrel; The Pegasus Theatre is running The Crane and Jamboree - Food for Thought; The Theatre at Headington is finishing their run of CS Lewis' The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe; and finally, the Oxford Shakespeare Company is performing The Taming of the Shrew at the Wadham College Gardens.

What's in the Cinema this week? (July 7 - 13)

Pirates PosterOpening in wide-release this week is the much anticipated Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. Captain Jack Sparrow returns in another supernatural adventure owing a blood debt to Davey Jones, captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. Will and Elizabeth's wedding plans get wrecked in the process.
