At Freud this week, you can catch Alex Hawkins on the Jazz Piano and Neil Mason on the Spanish Guitar; The Bullingdon Arms has The Hamilton Loomis Band from Texas on their famous Monday Blues night and Live Jazz with the Tom Grey Quintet; The Port Mahon has Rafael & Jez Cooke - renowned flamenco and jazz guitarists; The Old Parsonage has Graham Harvey with Mike Smith (drums) and Tim Dawes (dbl bass); Gee's Restaurant has a special jazz concert with Mim Grey; and The Big Bang Restaurant has Kenny Hung (piano) and Nick Blake (sax).
The nights are still warm and bright, so why not book tickets to Macbeth or Robin Hood at the Headington Hill Park, The Merchant of Venice at the Oxford Castle, The Tempest at the Trinity College gardens, or The Taming of the Shrew or The Importance of Being Earnest at the Wadham College gardens. Opening this week is the animated film Cars, starring the voices of Owen Wilson and Paul Newman. The film tells the story of a cocky racing car sentenced to community service after crashing into the town of Radiator Springs. To earn his way back onto the racetracks, he must first learn some respect.
Playing for three nights only at the Phoenix is the long-awaited re-release of the classic Antonioni film The Passenger, starring Jack Nicholson. Kept out of cinematic distribution for 20 years because of copyright disputes, the film has been remastered and re-released. Nicholson gives one of his greatest performances as David Locke, a disillusioned television journalist covering current affairs in Africa who impulsively decides to exchange identities with an acquaintance he finds dead in a Saharan hotel room.
