Kenny Hung at the Big Bang At Freud this week, you can catch Alex Hawkins on the Jazz Piano and Neil Mason on the Spanish Guitar; The Bullingdon Arms has The Hamilton Loomis Band from Texas on their famous Monday Blues night and Live Jazz with the Tom Grey Quintet; The Port Mahon has Rafael & Jez Cooke - renowned flamenco and jazz guitarists; The Old Parsonage has Graham Harvey with Mike Smith (drums) and Tim Dawes (dbl bass); Gee's Restaurant has a special jazz concert with Mim Grey; and The Big Bang Restaurant has Kenny Hung (piano) and Nick Blake (sax).

This Week's Classical Music (July 27 - Aug 3)

Opera AnywhereSummer is a wonderful time for music in Oxford and nearby. What's On: Magdalen College Auditorium is this week's location for Sunday's Coffee Concert with the Adderbury Ensemble; The Sheldonian Theatre will host Oxford Philomusica's performance of Schumann & Shostakovich, as well as Adderbury Ensemble's Summer Concert; The Jacqueline Du Pre Music Building will host an evening of Oxford Philomusica's Piano Festival; Oxford Town Hall has the European Medical Students' Orchestra 2006 performing Bernstein, Mozart, and Vaughan-Williams; Wadham College Chapel is hosting Jack Gibbons, who is performing a Chopin concert, and finally, Exeter College Chapel will host Charivari Agreable four nights this week, performing Mozart's English Muses, Songs Across the Oceans, Mozart's Keyboard Heritage, and The Virtuoso Godfather, in addition to Opera Anywhere's Open-Air concert featuring Puccini, Mozart, Handel, and Britten.

What's in the Theatre this week? (July 27 - Aug 3)

Merchant of Venice LogoThe nights are still warm and bright, so why not book tickets to Macbeth or Robin Hood at the Headington Hill Park, The Merchant of Venice at the Oxford Castle, The Tempest at the Trinity College gardens, or The Taming of the Shrew or The Importance of Being Earnest at the Wadham College gardens. Also showing this week: The Oxford Playhouse has Stacey Kent & Jim Tomlinson - The winners of this year's BBC Jazz Award for Album of the year, and the children's show The Gruffalo; The Old Fire Station is showing The Life and Crimes of President Ubu; The New Theatre is showing Oliver!; and finally, The Theatre at Headington has Bampton Classical Opera with Vicente Martín y Soler LA CAPRICCIOSA CORRETTA (THE TAMING OF THE SHREW). What's in the Cinema this week? (July 28 - Aug 3)

Cars PosterOpening this week is the animated film Cars, starring the voices of Owen Wilson and Paul Newman. The film tells the story of a cocky racing car sentenced to community service after crashing into the town of Radiator Springs. To earn his way back onto the racetracks, he must first learn some respect.

The Passenger PosterPlaying for three nights only at the Phoenix is the long-awaited re-release of the classic Antonioni film The Passenger, starring Jack Nicholson. Kept out of cinematic distribution for 20 years because of copyright disputes, the film has been remastered and re-released. Nicholson gives one of his greatest performances as David Locke, a disillusioned television journalist covering current affairs in Africa who impulsively decides to exchange identities with an acquaintance he finds dead in a Saharan hotel room.
