This Week's Jazz and Blues (August 4 - 10)

Abi Strevens at the Big Bang At Freud this week, you can catch Alex Hawkins on the Jazz Piano, Neil Mason on the Spanish Guitar, and the Karl Demata Blues Duo; The Bullingdon Arms has Lightning Willie & The Poor Boys from the USA on their famous Monday Blues night and Live Jazz with the Tom Grey Quintet; The Old Parsonage has Martin Shaw Trio (trumpet led trio featuring Tim Lapthorne - piano and Tim Dawes, Double Bass); Gee's Restaurant has Simon Colam (piano led trio); The Big Bang Restaurant has Abi Strevens (vocals) & Martin Pickett (piano); Bar Milano has a Jazz Emporium; and QI Club has Piney & The Bluegrass Two.

This Week's Classical Music (August 4 - 10)

Charivari AgreableMagdalen College Auditorium is this week's location for Sunday's Coffee Concert with the Adderbury Ensemble, as well as Jack Gibbons playing Lisz; The Sheldonian Theatre will host three nights of the Adderbury Ensemble's Summer Concert, and finally, Exeter College Chapel will host Charivari Agreable three nights this week, performing Songs Across the Oceans, Mozart's English Muses, and Mazes & Madness.

What's in the Theatre this week? (August 4 - 10)

Robin Hood LogoThe nights may have gotten temporarily cooler, but there's still time to catch some outdoor theatre. Put on a sweater, bring a blanket, and book tickets to Macbeth or Robin Hood at the Headington Hill Park, The Merchant of Venice at the Oxford Castle (nearing the end of its run), or The Taming of the Shrew or The Importance of Being Earnest at the Wadham College gardens (also nearing their ends). You can also still catch Love's Labour's Lost at the Merton College Gardens through Saturday night.

Also showing this week: The Oxford Playhouse is running The Gruffalo, Gina Yashere, and Charley's Aunt; The Old Fire Station is showing The Life and Crimes of President Ubu; The New Theatre is showing Oliver!; and finally, The Abingdon Touring Theatre Company will be bringing Canterbury Tales to Charlbury, Bampton, Steventon, and Abingdon.

What's in the Cinema this week? (August 4 - 10)

Super Ex-Girlfriend Poster Opening this week is comedy My Super Ex-Girlfriend. A guy discovers that the girl he has just dumped is actually a superhero. And his life becomes hell when the scorned 'G-Girl' starts to use her powers to get back at him. The film is rated 12A, and stars Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson.

Ant Bully PosterAlso out this week, in time for the school holidays, is Ant Bully. A 10-year-old boy takes his frustrations out on the ants in his front yard. But he soon regrets his actions when the ants shrink him, then force him to live amongst them. Rated U, the film is voiced by Julia Roberts, Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep, and Paul Giamatti.

Miami Vice PosterIn wide release this week is the action film Miami Vice. Directed by the original creator of the TV series, the film follows Crockett and Tubbs up against arms and drugs dealers in south Florida. But things get complicated with family threats and a risky romance. Rated 15, the film stars Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
