This Week's Jazz and Blues (August 11 - 17)

Rudy Rotta Band At Freud this week, you can catch Dymock Brett on the Jazz Piano, Neil Mason on the Spanish Guitar, Martin on the Flamenco Guitar, and the Karl Demata Blues Duo; The Bullingdon Arms has The Rudy Rotta Band from Italy on their famous Monday Blues night and Live Jazz with the Tom Grey Quintet; The Old Parsonage has Steve Kaldestad (sax) with piano and double bass; Gee's Restaurant has Olivia Tebbutt (vocals) Tim Lapthorne (piano) Tim Dawes (dbl bass); The Big Bang Restaurant has Hilary Palmer & Tim Coulson; Bar Milano has a Jazz, Blues, & Folk Night with Chiarina Darrah; Jamie Baum, a renowned Jazz Flautist, performs with the Luis D'Agostino Trio at the Wesley Memorial Hall on New Inn Hall Street; and QI Club has Katy Bennett + Luke Smith.

This Week's Classical Music (August 11 - 17)

Charivari AgreableMagdalen College Auditorium is this week's location for Sunday's Coffee Concert with James Lisney on piano, as well as Jack Gibbons playing Chopin; The Sheldonian Theatre will host the City of Oxford Orchestra's Glorious Baroque evening; Christ Church Cathedral has the Cathedral Singers performing Alpha & Omega; Jack Gibbons plays "Pictures at an Art Exhibition" at Wadham College Chapel; and finally, Exeter College Chapel will host Charivari Agreable four nights this week, performing Vivaldi: Stabat Mater & Nisi Dominus, Songs Across the Oceans, A Sweet Concord of Winds, and Mazes & Madness.

What's in the Cinema this week? (August 11 - 17)

Monster House PosterOpening this week is the animated Monster House. Three kids discover that their neighbour's house is a living monster determined to eat trick-and-treaters on Halloween. The problem is getting others to believe them so they can save their neighbourhood. The film is rated PG, and stars the voices of Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Jason Lee.

Lady in the Water PosterAlso out this week is the fantasy/mystery Lady in the Water, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, The Village, Signs). When a building manager rescues a mysterious young woman he discovers that she;s actually a character from a bedtime story trying to get back to the world she knows. The film is rated PG, and stars Paul Giamatti, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Jeffrey Wright.
