Good Reason to Walk

A sponsored dog walk to benefit Rehoming Animals in Need (RAIN) will take place Saturday and Sunday, September 2 & 3, between 9.30am and 4.30pm at Shotover Hill. Borrow a friend's dog if you have to. It's a great cause! For more info, call 01865 765008

Pawel Kuterba At Freud this week, you can catch Neil Mason on the Spanish Guitar, The Alex Hawkins Jazz Band, and the Karl Demata Blues Duo; The Bullingdon Arms is featuring The Hitman Blues Band from the USA on their Famous Monday Night Blues, as well as the Tom Grey Quintet on their Tuesday Jazz Night; The Old Parsonage has the Graham Harvey trio featuring Matt Skelton (drums); Gee's Restaurant has Tina May (vocals) Graham Harvey (piano) Tim Dawes (dbl bass); The Big Bang Restaurant has the Lizzie Hibbert Trio + Dan Hughes (sax); and Bar Milano has a Jazz Night with Pawel Kuterba.

Coffee ConcertsThe Holywell Music Room is this week's location of Sunday's Coffee Concert with the Adderbury Ensemble; The Jacqueline Du Pre Music Building will host Udayan (The Oxfordshire Bengali Cultural Society)'s performance of Monsoon Melodies as well as Songs of Love and Lesser Things, performed by Mark Denton.

You can still catch Macbeth or Robin Hood at the Headington Hill Park through September 9th.

The OverwhelmingAlso showing this week: The Oxford Playhouse is running the last of Charley's Aunt, as well as The Overwhelming; The New Theatre has a performance from the classic rock covers band The Dirty Earth Band; and finally, The Abingdon Touring Theatre Company will be bringing Canterbury Tales to the Unicorn Theatre in Abingdon, Magdalen College Auditorium, Tackley Village Hall, Filkins Village Hall, and the Arlington Arts Centre.

What's in the Cinema this week? (September 1 - 7)

The Wicker Man PosterThis week is a good week for those who like movies that make your heart race. First up is Open Water 2: Adrift. A group of friends forget to drop the ladder on their luxury yacht when they jump in for a swim. Unable to climb back on board, their weekend cruise soon turns into a battle for survival. This film is rated 12A and contains strong language and nudity. Next up is Crank, starring Jason Statham. To stay alive, a poisoned hit man has to keep his adrenaline pumping. He sets off through the streets of L.A. on a mission to find an antidote and save his girlfriend from danger. This film is certified 18 and contains strong violence, language and drug use. Lastly, The Wicker Man opens this week, starring Nicolas Cage. A sheriff investigating the disappearance of a young girl from a small island discovers there's a larger mystery to solve among the island's secretive, neo-pagan community. This film is certified 12A and contains moderate horror, violence and one use of strong language.

Little Man PosterOn the lighter side, opening this week is Little Man. A wannabe dad (Shawn Wayans) mistakes a vertically challenged criminal on the lam (Marlon Wayans) as his newly adopted son. The film is rated 12A, and stars Marlon and Shawn Wayans, and Tracy Morgan.

The Sentinel PosterThe Vue Cinema at Kassam Stadium has film The Sentinel, starring Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland, and Eva Longoria. A US Government Special Agent is framed and blackmailed over an affair with the First Lady. Although he has been relieved of his duties, he continues to try to prove his innocence, and save the life of the President. While attempting to uncover the person behind it all, he comes into confrontation with his protege. The film is rated 12A.
