Oxford: Sexy and Female-Friendly

According to a recent online poll and 200,000 voters, Oxford's residents were named the sexiest looking in the country!

Oxford has also been ranked the 13th female-friendliest place in the country in a survey that looked at aspects of female culture, such as nightlife, shopping, equal opportunities, designer shops and female-friendly bars and healthcare.

This Week's Jazz and Blues (September 15 - 21)

Abi Strevens At Freud this week, you can catch Lawrence on the Flamenco Guitar, The Alex Hawkins Jazz Band, the Karl Demata Blues Duo, and Eddie Thompson on the Acoustic Guitar; The Bullingdon Arms is featuring The Olly Alcock Band from the UK on their Famous Monday Night Blues, as well as the Tom Grey Quintet on their Tuesday Jazz Night; The Old Parsonage has The Tim Lapthorne trio with Graham Fox (drums); Gee's Restaurant has Hilary Cameron (vocals/piano), Mike Bradley (drums), and Tim Dawes (dbl bass); The Big Bang Restaurant has AST (Abi Strevens Trio) with Pete Dixon; and Bar Milano has a Jazz Night Emporium.

This Week's Classical Music (September 15 - 21)

Handel in OxfordThe Holywell Music Room is this week's location of Sunday's Coffee Concert with Frances Angell on Piano and Jan Schmolk on Violin, as well as the location for The Oxford Jazz Master Series featuring George Haslam.

Also this week are several performances from The Sixteen - one of the world's greatest vocal ensembles - performing their Handel in Oxford series. First is Music for Royal Occasions, followed by a Masterclass on The Art of the Castrato, a talk on Coram Boy with Jamila Gavin, Alexander's Feast, and finally, Cantatas with Elin Manahan.

Lastly, The Jacqueline Du Pre Music Building will host Cushion Concerts for young children, featuring the Cello.

What's in the Theatre this week? (September 15 - 21)

OperaBabesThe Oxford Playhouse is running the The Diary of a Nobody and Waiting for Godot; The Old Fire Station has Mixed Messages; The Burton Taylor Theatre has a preview of The Desire Tree; The New Theatre has The OperaBabes (pictured), Madama Butterfly, and Annie; The Theatre at Headington has The Musicmakers and I'm Not MAD I've Just Read Different Books!; and finally, The Abingdon Touring Theatre will be bringing Canterbury Tales to The Amey Theatre at Abingdon School, Woodcote Village Hall, and Harwell Village Hall. This is the final week of the Canterbury Tales tour.

What's in the Cinema this week? (September 15 - 21)

The Black Dahlia PosterTwo of this week's openers are not for the young or the faint-hearted. First up is the old school noir The Black Dahlia, which follows a detective investigating the murder of a would-be starlet in 1940s Hollywood. The film stars Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johansson, and Hilary Swank. It contains strong bloody violence, sex, and one use of very strong language. (15)

The Night Listener PosterNext is the drama The Night Listener, starring Robin Williams, Toni Collette and Sandra Oh. Robins plays a late night host of a radio show who is drawn into the world of a mysterious caller. The film contains strong language and child sexual abuse references. (15)

The Queen PosterFor those not interested in murder or mystery, The Queen is also being released this week. After the death of Diana, the public demanded a display of mourning from the Royal family during their private tragedy. Starring Helen Mirren, this drama tells the story of how Tony Blair and HM Queen Elizabeth II struggled to reach a compromise.
