4th Annual International Black Media Festival

October 5 - 8 O'Reilly Theatre, Keble College, Oxford

The four-day festival includes film premieres which explore the issues of Kidnappings in Haiti; the story Jah Bull and Baboo - two Rastafarians that sell LP records in an old colourful car through the countryside towns of Jamaica in the road movie Roots Time; hard hitting documentaries which investigated the murder and subsequent injustice surrounding Emmett Louis Till's death in The Untold story of Emmett Louis Till; and the graphic view of Sierra Leone from the inside in Ishmahil Blagrove, Jr Man Dem Nor Glory 'O; panel discussions; Q&A with filmmakers' workshops; book readings with aspiring and established authors; the Breaking the Illusions exhibition on black cinema history from 1800's to present day; and the festival signature closing event: the classic jazz brunch screenings.

This year the festival introduces the first guided black heritage walking tour of Oxford. The walking tour features Africans, African Americans and Caribbean scholars who attended the colleges of Oxford University from the 1800's.


The festival gala launch takes place at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History and the screening programme at the New O'Reilly Theatre in the grounds of Keble College, Oxford University.

This Week's Classical Music (September 29 - Oct 5)

coffee cupThis week's Coffee Concert at the Magdalen College Auditorium features Libor Novacek on piano performing Liszt Annees de pelerinage, deuxieme annee Italie.

Oxford Chamber Music SocietyContinuing through the weekend are several performances from The Oxford Chamber Music Festival - celebrating the music of Mozart, Schumann, Shostakovich and Larcher. Performances will take place at the Jacqueline Du Pre Music Building and the QI Club on Turl Street.

Random NumberAdditionally, there are Cushion Concerts for young children at the Jacqueline Du Pre Music Building this Sunday, featuring the Trumpet; IMS Prussia Cove performs at the Jacqueline Du Pre Music Building, and Random Number (pictured) performs at Modern Art Oxford.

Stefan Grossman At Freud this week, you can catch The Alex Hawkins Jazz Band, and Eddie Thompson on the Acoustic Guitar, and the Karl Demata Blues Duo; The Bullingdon Arms is featuring The Primo Blues Band from the UK on their Famous Monday Night Blues, as well as katya Gorrie and Denny Ilett Jr. on their Tuesday Jazz Night; The Spin Jazz Club at the Wheatsheaf features Roger Beaujolais on Vibes + The Spin Trio; The Old Parsonage has Anthony Kerr (vibes), Tim Dawes (dbl bass), and Tim Lapthorne (piano); The Big Bang Restaurant has Guida de Palma with Tim Dawes & Tim Lapthorne; and Bar Milano has Eddie Thompson playing instrumental jazz; and lastly, Stefan Grossman (pictured above) & Davy Graham play at the Holywell Music Room.

What's in the Cinema this week? (Sep 29 - Oct 5)

World Trade Center PosterFirst up is World Trade Center. Based on the true story about how the last two survivors were found alive from Ground Zero, Oliver Stone's film stars Nicolas Cage as one of the heroic police officers on the rescue mission. This film contains emotionally intense scenes, injury and strong language. (12A)

Click PosterOn the lighter side of things, opening this week is Adam Sandler's new movie Click. Sandler stars as a workaholic husband and father struggling to keep his family happy who gets hold of a remote control that helps him control his whole life. The film contains strong language and moderate sex and drug references (12A)


The Devil Wears Prada PosterIn limited release this weekend is The Devil Wears Prada, starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. Based on the best-selling novel by Lauren Weisberger, the film stars Streep as a wickedly charming editor whose cynical new assistant becomes seduced by the world of glamour. (PG)
