This Week's Jazz & Blues

Memo GonzalezAt Freud this week, you can catch The Karl Demata Blues Duo and Alex Hawkins on Piano; The Bullingdon Arms is featuring Memo Gonzalez & The Bluescasters from the USA (pictured) on their Famous Monday Night Blues, as well as the Tom Grey Quintet on their Tuesday Jazz Night; The Spin Jazz Club at the Wheatsheaf hasRob Townsend (Sax) and the Spin Trio; The Music Market has the Oxford Uni Jazz Society; The Old Parsonage has Graham Harvey (piano led trio featuring Martin Shaw - trumpet); The Big Bang Restaurant has Blues for Pablo; Bar Milano has the Franz Fauke Jazz Duo; and lastly,QI Club has Sweet and Lowdown with Peter Parker.

Lastly, the Charity Ball takes place at the Town Hall on Thursday, with live jazz from Jazz Emporium.

coffee cupThis week's Coffee Concert at the Holywell Music Room features the Sorrel String Quartet. The Holywell Music Room is also hosting Merle Fairhurst - A Garland of Folk Songs.

Oxford LiederThe Oxford Lieder festival continues this week with performances happening daily at various venues in Oxford, including the Holywell Music Room, New College Chapel, and Christ Church Cathedral.

The Jacqueline Du Pre Music Building hosts Oxford Philomusica's performance of the Mozart Piano Sonata Series featuring Melvyn Tan. Also at this venue is the Speedwell & Wellbeing Trust's A Musical Soiree featuring the Piano and the Flute, and Oxford Contemporary Music's Three Strange Angels - a pioneering new percussion ensemble.

Bartholomew ConsortSt. Barnabus Church hosts the Bartholomew Consort performing Et Ecce Terrae Motus - Masterpieces of Poly Choral Music from the Renaissance and Baroque.

Alan CarrThe Oxford Playhouse has Alan Carr (pictured left) and The Threepenny Opera (University of Oxford Student Company production); The Old Fire Station has The Barber of Seville and A Night at the Grand-Guignol; The Burton Taylor Theatre has Educating Rita by Willy Russell and A Number by Caryl Churchill; The New Theatre has La Boheme, Tristan and Isolde, That'll Be The Day, and Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance; the O'Reilly Theatre at Keble College has the student production Art; the Moser Theatre at Wadham College has The Merchant of Venice; The Pegasus Theatre has the child-friendly The Chatterbox; and finally The Theatre at Headington has The World Goes 'Round, an engaging musical revue embracing musicals from Chicago to Funny Girl, from New York, New York to Kiss of the Spiderwoman .

What's in the cinema this week? (Oct 20 - 26)

The Grudge 2 PosterFirst up is The Grudge 2, starring Amber Tamblyn, Sarah Michelle Geller, and Jennifer Beals. This sequel to the global horror hit of 2006 (which itself was a remake of a Japanese film) continues the story of 'The Grudge', a mysterious supernatural curse that kills those who come into contact with it. Kicking off in a burned-down house in Tokyo, the grudge is unleashed on a group of seemingly unrelated victims, who have no way of stopping it. (15)

Step Up PosterAlso opening this week is Step Up, which is about a gifted street dancer from the wrong side of the tracks who gets one shot at the elite Maryland School of the Arts to prove he could make it as a dancer. (PG)


Marie Antoinette PosterLastly, opening this week is Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman. Sophia Coppola's new film tells the story of one of the most misunderstood women in history living in the scandalous world of Versailles. This is the retelling of France's iconic but ill-fated queen, Marie Antoinette, from her betrothal and marriage to Louis XVI at 15 to her reign as queen at 19 and to her beheading in 1793 at the age of 38.
