Chris GarrickAt Freud this week, you can catch The Karl Demata Blues Duo, the Alex Hawkins jazz trio, Bob Cockburn on guitar and vocals, Jean Phillippe on piano, and Eddie Thompson on acoustic guitar; The Spin Jazz Club at the Wheatsheaf has Chris Garrick (pictured) and David Gordon (Violin / Piano) with Pete Oxley/ Russ Morgan; The Old Parsonage has the Dave Lewis Trio (sax led trio); Gee's has the Neil Angilley Trio; The Big Bang Restaurant has AST with Alun Harries on drums; and lastly, QI Club has Sweet and Lowdown with Peter Parker.

coffee cupThis week's Coffee Concert at the Holywell Music Room features the Coull String Quartet. The Holywell Music Room is also hosting Oxford Operatic Society'sOxford Jazz Master Series Highlights from Merrie England & White Horse Inn, the featuring George Haslam on Baritone Sax, and Eliza Carthy and Saul Rose.

I FagioliniThe Sheldonian Theatre is hosting Whirling Dervishes - Turkish Sufi music, Oxford University's Orchestra performing Brahms, Wagner, and Strauss, and Music at Oxford's performance of I Fagiolini (pictured).

Queen's College Chapel will host the Eglesfield Musical Society peforming Madrigals, Medleys and Mud, as well as an organ recital by David Ballantyne.

The Jacqueline du Pre Music Building at St. Hilda's College will host a family concert called 'Why Handel Waggled His Wig', as well as Dreams & Reflections with Margaret Cooper (soprano) and Annabel Thwaite (piano), and a piano recital featuring Petra Casen.

Colin CarrLastly, there will be Indian Violin Music at St Edwards School, Lovesong of Rangipouri at Exeter College, Songs of Java at The Vaults Cafe, and an Evening with Colin Carr (pictured), International Cellist, at Magdalen College School.

What's in the Cinema this Week? (Nov 3 - 9)

Sixty Six PosterFirst up is Sixty Six, starring Helena Bonham-Carter, Eddie Marsan, and Stephen Rea. Helena Bonham-Carter stars as the mother of a 12-year-old boy whose Bar Mitzvah gets pushed aside as England make it through to the World Cup final on the same day. This film contains infrequent strong language and moderate sex references. (12A)

Prestige PosterAlso opening this week is The Prestige, starring Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, and Michael Caine. Set in early 1900s London, Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale play two magicians whose friendly competition turns into a fierce rivalry that puts the lives of the people around them at great risk. This film contains moderate violence and fatalities.(12A)


Page Turner PosterLastly, opening at the Phoenix this week is The Page Turner (La Tourneuse de pages), starring Catherine Frot and Deborah Francois. Mélanie Prouvost, a ten-year-old butcher's daughter, is a gifted piano player. That is why she and her parents decide that she sit for the Conservatory entrance exam. Although Mélanie is very likely to be admitted, she gets distracted by the president of the jury's offhand attitude and she fails. Ten years later, Mélanie becomes the former president of the jury's page turner, and waits patiently to seek her revenge... (15)
