What's in the Cinema this Week? (Nov 10-16)

Breaking and Entering PosterFirst up is Breaking & Entering, starring Jude Law, Juliette Binoche, and Robin Wright Penn. The lives of a group of Londoners and recent immigrants collide when a landscape artist's investigations into his burgled office take him out of his secure, comfortable world. This film contains strong language and moderate sex. (15)

Starter for Ten PosterAlso opening this week is Starter For Ten, starring Charles Dance, James McAvoy, and Raj Ghatak. Set in 1985, James McAvoy stars as a working-class student grappling with love and lectures during his first year at Bristol University. This film contains moderate language and one scene of drug use.(12A)

Red Road PosterOpening at the Phoenix this week is Red Road, starring Kate Dickie and Tony Curran. Jackie (Dickie) works as a CCTV operator. Each day she watches over a small part of the world, protecting the people living their lives under her gaze. One day a man appears on her monitor, whom she thought she would never see again, whom she never wanted to see again. Now that she has no choice, she is compelled to confront him. This film contains strong sex and very strong language (18)

Inconvenient Truth PosterAll week long, you can catch An Inconvenient Truth - A documentary on Al Gore's campaign to make the issue of global warming a recognized problem worldwide - at the Ultimate Picture Palace.

The Blue Room (Freely adapted from Arthur Schnitzler's dramatic expose, La Ronde, The Blue Room is a play in ten intimate acts, linking the sexual desires of 10 people in a never-ending chain. A bittersweet portrayal of sex and relationships in a modern world.)

Portrait of DylanPortrait of Dylan by Tony Layton (This rarely performed and extremely novel play will captivate hearts, exploring the colourful life of the poet Dylan Thomas, from his volatile marriage to his tragic death in America, 1953.)

Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas (Enter the strange and sensual world of village voices and dream visions... find it Under Milk Wood.)

New Theatre:

Beverley Knight
(An awesome voice from this three times MOBO award winner. She's been notching up the hits ever since her classic song 'Flavour Of The Old School' (1995) with more than ten of her songs reaching the Top 40.)

Theatre at Headington:

Little Shop of Horrors ( Seymour Krelbourn, a geeky Skid Row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. It turns out that the plant isn't just hungry, but it came from outer space on a mission to dominate the world!)

College Theatre:

The Memory of Water -
O'Reilly Theatre, Keble College

Presented by the Oxford Theatre Guild. One dead mother, three living daughters, and two hapless male companions wrangle with their expectations and disappointments as they try to untangle the knotty skein of memories, often wildly conflicting, that arise when they are brought together for a few bitterly cold days on the English coast.

Hedda Gabler - Moser Theatre, Wadham College

Hedda Gabler is an intelligent and ambitious woman, trapped in the stifling environment of a bourgeois marriage. When old flame Loevborg, renters Hedda's life with a masterpiece that threatens her husband's career, Hedda takes drastic and fatal action.

One For The Road - Bop Cellar, Hertford College

False Teeth presents one of Pinter's most vicious plays, described as 'a mesmerising, terrifying, brilliantly controlled piece, which distils the rage that inspired it into a flawless, richly resonant miniature masterpiece'. Each night the piece will be accompanied by a different 'special guest' performance.

Desdemona: a play about a hankerchief - Corpus Christi Music Room

by Paula Vogel. Men only see each other in their eyes... only each other This is Paula Vogel's all-female take on the Shakespearean classic, Othello.

Christie in Love - St. Edmund Hall

by Howard Brenton. Hearfelt, dark comedy set an exciting non-theatrical venue of The Wolfson Hall.

Butley - O'Reilly Theatre, Keble College

by Simon Gray. Butley' is set in the English Department of a college at the University of London in the early seventies. Ben Butley is about to have one of the worst days of his life, when everyone close to him grows tired of his abrasive sense of humour and his defensive nature. But is Ben making trouble for himself, or merely having fun?

Murder in Play - The Oakshott Room, Lincoln College

by Simon Brett. Described as a worthy companion to Simon Brett's "Charles Paris series" of theatrical thriller novels, 'Murder in Play' follows the exploits of Boris Smolensky and his budget repertory company as they try to rehearse "Murder at Priorswell Manor". However the production looks decidedly shaky with the cast more interested in their egos than the play. Life then imitates art as one > of the leads is killed and the rest of the cast become suspects.

This Week's Classical Music (Nov 10-16)

coffee cupThis week's Coffee Concert at the Holywell Music Room features the Adderbury Ensemble. The Holywell Music Room is also hosting Geoffrey Hopkins playing the Chopin Etudes, and Oxford Contemporary Music's Solveig Slettahjell & Limiliekki - Jazz from Finland and Norway.

Conductor Jason LaiThe Sheldonian Theatre is hosting Oxford University Orchestra's "R Strauss-EinHeldenleben" (Wagner: Overture to Die Meistersinger, Brahms: Violin Concerto, conducted by Jason Lai, pictured right), Oxford Philomusica's "Mozart Piano Concerto Series", and City Of Oxford Orchestra's "A Time To Remember", performing pieces by Gershwin, Shostakovich and Bernstein.

Christ Church Cathedral has Come and Sing - Messiah!, with rehearsals open to the public on the afternoon of the performance.

The Jacqueline du Pre Music Building at St. Hilda's College will host the Convergence Quartet + Veryan Weston Trio - exciting new jazz with musicians from the USA and UK, Cushion Concerts for children featuring the Clarinet, and Victor Ryabchikov giving a piano recital of works by Chopin, Glinka and Liszt.

Lastly, there will be an organ recital at Queen's College, featuring Tim Hone, and Oxford Contemporary Music's "Decibel" at Modern Art Oxford.

Blue BishopsAt Freud this week, you can catch The Karl Demata Blues Duo, Alex Hawkins on jazz piano, Jean Phillippe on piano, and Eddie Thompson on acoustic guitar; Backroom at the Bullingdon Arms features The Blue Bishops (pictured) on their famous Monday Blues night, as well as the Tom Grey Quintet on their Oxford Jazz Club Tuesdays; The Spin Jazz Club at the Wheatsheaf has the New Jazz Couriers; The Old Parsonage has the Dave Lewis Trio (sax led trio); Gee's has Georgia Mancio and Friends; The Big Bang Restaurant has Polly Gibbons with Tim Dawes; Bar Milano has Delicious Music Jazz Night with Barnabas; and lastly, QI Club has Sweet and Lowdown with Peter Parker.
