What's in the Cinema This Week? (June 1-7)

Wedding DazeOpening in Oxford this week is Wedding Daze, starring Jason Biggs and Isla Fisher. This film is a slapstick comedy starring Jason Biggs (American Pie) as a down in the dumps romantic who spontaneously proposes to a beautiful waitress (Isla Fisher). Much to his surprise, she says yes. This film contains strong sex references. (15)


Paradis LostAlso opening this week is Paradise Lost, also known as Turistas in America, which stars Josh Duhamel and Melissa George. A group of young backpackers' holiday turns sour when a bus accident leaves them marooned in a remote Brazilian jungle that holds a dark secret. This film contains strong bloody violence. (18)


JindabyneRunning this week at the Phoenix is Jindabyne starring Laura Linney, Gabriel Byrne and Deborra-Lee Furness. Stewart Kane, an Irishman living in the Australian town of Jindabyne, is on a fishing trip in isolated hill country with three other men when they discover the body of a murdered girl in the river. Rather than return to the town immediately, they continue fishing and report their gruesome find days later. Stewart's wife Claire is the last to find out. Deeply disturbed by her husband's action, her faith in her relationship with Stewart is shaken to the core. She wants to understand and tries to make things right. In her determination to help the victim's family Claire sets herself not only against her own family and friends but also those of the dead girl. Her marriage is taken to the brink and her peaceful life with Stewart and their young son hangs in the balance. The story of a murder and a marriage. A powerful and original film about the things that haunt us. (15)

It promises to be a highly polished and exciting musical.

Pegasus Theatre:
Screen Night - OFVM return with the latest reels to come out of their busy studios in East Oxford. Brand new film and digital work all made by OFVM and local film-makers.

College Theatre:
Dark Side of the Moon - O'Reilly Theatre, Keble College. Comedy and tragedy collide to produce a haunting modern fairy-tale of forbidden love.

The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer - Magdalen College Fellow's Garden. Chaucer's timeless masterpiece follows a band of pilgrims as they make their way on pilgrimage to Canterbury… “Let each of you shorten our way with a tale....” In a new adaptation by Harriet Bradley from the modern translation, 7 of the best-loved Tales are brought to life. At times hilarious, at others truthful and poignant.

A Midsummer Night's Dream - Oriel College, First Quad. The first of Shakespeare's truly great plays; his strangest and most beautiful work.
