What's in the Cinema this Week? (July 27 - Aug 02)

The SimpsonsOpening this week in Oxford is The Simpsons Movie, starring the voices of Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, and Hank Azaria. Springfield’s most famous family appear in their first feature-length movie. Can Homer save the world from a catastrophe he created? This film contains mild language, innuendo and comic violence. (PG)

TransformersAlso opening this week is Transformers starring Shia LaBeouf and Jon Voight. State of the art CGI brings the Transformers to life, as rival Autobots and Decepticons bring their battle to Earth. Will humanity survive? This film contains moderate action violence. (12A)

The BRITDOC FILM FESTIVAL continues at The Phoenix Picture House with a large selection of free screenings of the best of international documentary films. See our website for details and screening times. Also at the Phoenix this week is the spellbinding Ingmar Bergman classic The Seventh Seal, and a screening o the digitally re-mastered Goldfinger.

LovewreckedLastly, at the Vue this week is the teenage film Lovewrecked starring Amanda Bynes, Chris Carmack, Jonathan Bennett, and Jamie-Lynn DiScala. Jenny is madly in love with rock–god Jason Masters so she cannot believe her luck when he winds up staying at the resort where she is working for the summer. A freak accident finds them stranded on a desert island together or so they think. Jenny soon finds that far from being swept away they were actually swept up on the resort‘s hidden beach! But not wanting to miss out on some quality time with one of the world‘s most lusted after men she decides to continue the charade until he has fallen for her. (PG)

Taming of the ShrewThe Taming of the Shrew - Baptista Minola has two daughters; obedient Bianca and ill-tempered Katherine. A Midsummer Night's Dream - A Midsummer Night's Dream is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare written sometime in the 1590s. It portrays the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of amateur actors, their interactions with the Duke and Duchess of Athens, Theseus and Hippolyta, and with fairies who inhabit a moonlit forest. The play is one of Shakespeare's most popular.

Supergrass to play Oxford's Carling Academy

Supergrass are coming home! TCT Music and Carling Academy Oxford (formerly The Zodiac) are delighted to announce a one-off, home town gig by the almighty Supergrass on Sunday 23rd September.


“As it’s the opening week of Carling Academy Oxford, we thought it was only right to invite one of Oxford’s biggest bands to play. Last time we did a hometown show with Supergrass, it sold out in 24 hours, so we’re delighted to announce another one...” says TCT Music’s Alan Day.
