What's in the Cinema this Week? (Aug 24-30)

Knocked UpOpening this week in Oxford is Knocked Up, starring Katherine Heigl, Seth Rogen, and Paul Rudd. Knocked Up is a comedy about the unexpected prospect of parenthood for a young career woman who gets pregnant after a one-night-stand with a man who's a bit of a slacker. This film contains strong language and drug use.(15)

WaitressAlso out this week is Waitress, starring Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Jeremy Sisto, and Cheryl Hines. An unhappy waitress is looking for a way out. But getting pregnant, pursuing a big baking prize and getting involved with her doctor make things rather complicated. This film contains adultery and domestic abuse themes and one use of strong language. (12A)

Lady ChatterleyAt the Phoenix this week is Lady Chatterley starring Hippolyte Girardot, Marina Hands, and Jean-Louis Coullo'ch. Drawing on the second and most tender version of D.H. Lawrence’s tale of burgeoning desire, Ferran’s expansive, moving film achieves the near-impossible goal of staying faithful to the text in a uniquely cinematic way. Constance, a Lady of the Manor trapped in a bleak, passionless life with a wheelchair-bound husband, experiences an awakening of the senses with her solitary gamekeeper. The story will be familiar to many, but here it is told with a quiet sensitivity and breathtaking visual beauty, underpinned by restrained yet powerful performances from Hands and Coullo’ch. (18)

The HoaxAlso at the Phoenix this week is The Hoax starring Alfred Molina, Hope Davis, Richard Gere, and Stanley Tucci. When he sees his attempt to sell his latest novel to the publishing giant, McGraw Hill, fall at the last hurdle, ambitious author Clifford Irving (Gere) loudly proclaims that his next novel will be "the book of the century." Irving begins to fantasise about a scenario in which he convinces the publisher that he has been personally selected by eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes to pen his memoirs. The revenge fantasy becomes a complicated reality, however, when Irving approaches McGraw Hill with a series of forged letters allegedly written by Hughes and offering unwavering support for the project. Can Irving maintain the charade? (15)

No ReservationsFinally, in sneak previews Wednesday and Thursday is No Reservations, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart, and Abigail Breslin. Catherine Zeta-Jones stars as a perfectionist New York chef who unexpectedly becomes the guardian of her nine-year-old niece. However, it’s not her only new challenge, as she falls in love with a rival chef. This film contains mild sex references and language. (PG)
