At the Phoenix this week is Lady Chatterley starring Hippolyte Girardot, Marina Hands, and Jean-Louis Coullo'ch. Drawing on the second and most tender version of D.H. Lawrence’s tale of burgeoning desire, Ferran’s expansive, moving film achieves the near-impossible goal of staying faithful to the text in a uniquely cinematic way. Constance, a Lady of the Manor trapped in a bleak, passionless life with a wheelchair-bound husband, experiences an awakening of the senses with her solitary gamekeeper. The story will be familiar to many, but here it is told with a quiet sensitivity and breathtaking visual beauty, underpinned by restrained yet powerful performances from Hands and Coullo’ch. (18)
Also at the Phoenix this week is The Hoax starring Alfred Molina, Hope Davis, Richard Gere, and Stanley Tucci. When he sees his attempt to sell his latest novel to the publishing giant, McGraw Hill, fall at the last hurdle, ambitious author Clifford Irving (Gere) loudly proclaims that his next novel will be "the book of the century." Irving begins to fantasise about a scenario in which he convinces the publisher that he has been personally selected by eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes to pen his memoirs. The revenge fantasy becomes a complicated reality, however, when Irving approaches McGraw Hill with a series of forged letters allegedly written by Hughes and offering unwavering support for the project. Can Irving maintain the charade? (15)
