What's in the Cinema this Week? (Sept 14-20)

3:10 to YumaOpening in Oxford this week is 3:10 to Yuma, starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. A struggling rancher (Christian Bale) agrees to transport a notorious outlaw (Russell Crowe) on the 3:10 to Yuma - the train that will take him to be hanged. But the bandit's men and the temptation of hidden loot turn the trip into a violent journey toward each man's destiny. This film contains strong violence. (15)

Shoot 'em UpAlso out this week is Shoot 'em Up, starring Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti and Monica Bellucci. Clive Owen stars as a mystifying loner who teams up with an unlikely ally to protect a new born baby from a ruthless criminal, Paul Giamatti. This film contains strong bloody violence. (18)

SuperbadAt the Magdalen Odeon and the Vue is Superbad starring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera.High school friends Evan and Seth attempt to reverse a life long losing streak with girls, in one beer soaked night. A coming of age comedy from the makers of '40 Year Old Virgin'. (15)

Death ProofFinally, previewing on Thursday is Death Proof. Quentin Tarantino's new movie is a homage to seventies 'B' movies and stars Kurt Russell as a scarred stuntman who uses his "death proof" cars to pursue his murderous plans. This film contains strong violence and gory moments. (18)

Oxford Playhouse:

Jeremy HardyJeremy Hardy - Jeremy's perhaps best remembered as a much younger man, but there is nothing he can do about that now. Still alive and able to speak unaided for lengthy periods, this show will be not so much a one-man show as an under-staffed cavalcade.

By JeevesBy Jeeves - When Bertie Wooster’s banjo mysteriously disappears, his quick witted and unflappable manservant, Jeeves, suggests he entertain his audience by relating the hapless romantic misadventures of his circle of high-society London cronies. Old Fire Station:
Wham Bam - Stupid and clever, happy and sad, the brand new sketch show is generously stuffed with a bite of everything you would possibly want in a comedy sandwitch. Things involving: a utopia, a windmill, musical chairs, Edward Scissorhands, a rollercoaster, and some clowns trying their hand at open surgery. Wedged on the fence between student and professional, Footlights has a lot to prove and this lot are going to prove it!

Potted Potter - The Unofficial Harry Experience, A Parody by Dan & Jeff - All seven Harry Potter books in sixty minutes? Watch Blue Peter's comic storytelling duo, Dan and Jeff, attempt the ultimate challenge! This brilliantly funny show features all your favourite characters, making ideal entertainment for the whole family. It's a quirky and irreverent race through the plots of the books, involving frantic costume changes, charts songs and a very frightening dragon. Following sell-out seasons at the Edinburgh Festival and in London, this first national tour is a must-see for Potter addicts and a great introduction to the series for anyone who's ever wondered what all the fuss is about. To help fans that haven't had the chance to read book seven, Dan and Jeff will offer a chance to look away before spoiling any surprises!!

Burton Taylor Theatre:
Multilateral - The Writers' Group at Oxford Playhouse have entered a total of seventeen brand new short plays for the Playhouse's New Writing Festival. Come and see the three winning entries from these local writers.

St Nicholas by Conor McPherson- A funny, chilling and supernatural solo tale of vampires and theatre critics from the writer of The Weir. A jaded theatre critic, played by Father Ted's Peter Dineen, steps beyond the pale and falls for a beautiful young actress in one of the shows he is reviewing. There follows a story of seduction, entrapment and blood, which subsequently finds him caught up in a coven of modern day vampires all living in south London. "Conor McPherson is the finest theatrical spellbinder of his generation." Daily Telegraph

These Four Walls - A beautiful, haunting play about a young cellist growing up in Berlin during the Second World War. Blue-eyed and blonde-haired, by day Lena performs to Nazis who have no idea she is Jewish; by night she conceals her family behind the false wall of her apartment. Now her only hiding place is inside this cupboard... "As comical as it is haunting - the production couldn’t get any better." Time Out

New Theatre:

Ross NobleRoss Noble - The funniest living Geordie, Perrier nominee 1999 and Time Out 'Comedian of the Year 1999', Ross has appeared on many TV shows, including Have I Got News For You.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra UK - The Glenn Miller Orchestra UK has maintained the exact line-up on stage devised by Glenn, consisting of the leader, five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and three rhythm plus a male and female vocalist. The singers perform both individually and as part of The Moonlight Serenaders vocal group. The Uptown Hall Gang - an outstanding Dixieland group drawn from members of the orchestra is also featured. Ray McVay leads.

Theatre at Headington:
Rohan McCullough presents Testament of Youth - Testament of Youth is the first and most famous of Vera Brittain's three autobiographical works, covering the period 1913-25 and including her harrowing experiences as a Volutary Aid Detachment Nurse in war-torn Europe. In this award-winning production, Rohan McCullough brings those experiences vividly to life.
