What's in the Cinema this Week? (April4-10)

The following films are coming out in Oxford this week:

Son of RambowSon of Rambow (12A) starring Jessica Hynes, Tallulah Evans, Neil Dudgeon, Zofia Brooks. Contains dangerous behaviour, smoking and moderate language. Son of Rambow merges Grange Hill with the wit and imagination of Michel Gondry to winning and original effect. In 1980s England, Will Proudfoot (Milner) is the good-hearted but sheltered son of a Plymouth Brethren family. The Brethren forbid radio, television and films, but Will finds escapism in his drawing, creating a wildly inventive fantasy world. A bit of bother at school throws him together with playground hard-nut Lee Carter (Poulter), who shows him a bootleg copy of First Blood. Blown away by what he sees, Will's imagination goes into overdrive, and soon he's helping Lee Carter shoot a camcorder epic.

One Missed Call One Missed Call (15) starring Shannyn Sossamon, Edward Burns, Ray Wise, Azura Skye, Johnny Lewis, Jason Beghe. Beth Raymond has the gloomy pleasure of witnessing the deaths of four friends soon after they have received phone calls apparently from themselves in the future which flag up the exact time of their demise. By strange quirk, after every death, a small, red piece of candy is found in the victim's mouth. Beth reports these strange occurrences to the police but they think she is insane. Detective Jack Andrews, however, believes her and together they attempt to solve the mystery before Beth receives a death call herself.

Never Back DownNever Back Down (15) starring Sean Faris, Amber Heard, Cam Gigandet, Djimon Hounsou. Shortly after moving to a new town with his family, Jake Tyler finds himself face-to-face with local martial arts champion Ryan McCarty and suffers a humiliating beating. After relentless taunts Jake seeks the mentoring of a veteran fighter to train his mind and body for one final, no-holds-barred, elimination fight with his merciless nemesis.

AwakeAwake (15) starring Hayden Christensen, Jessica Alba, Terrence Howard, Lena Olin, Christopher McDonald. Awake is a psychological thriller that tells the story of a man undergoing heart surgery while experiencing a phenomenon called "anesthetic awareness," which leaves him awake but paralyzed throughout the operation. As various obstacles present themselves, his wife must make life-altering decisions while wrestling with her own personal drama.

Funny GamesFunny Games (18) starring Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Michael Pitt, Boyd Gaines. Contains strong sustained threat, humiliation and violence. Never let strangers into your house! When Paul and Fred enter the lives of Anna (Naomi Watts), George (Tim Roth) and Georgie, a terrifying game begins and everyone involved is desperately at stake. Director, Michael Haneke (Cache) re-directs 'Funny Games' which he originally made in 1997, maintaining the high suspense and drama like no one else. If you loved 'Cape Fear' and 'The Hills have Eyes', you'll love 'Funny Games

21There is an advanced screening on Wednesday of 21 (12A) starring Jim Sturgees, Kevin Spacey.Contains moderate violence and sex references. What would you do if you found yourself with an unbelievable mathematical ability, but no way to pay for your university bills? '21' follows Ben Cambpell, a university student with an unbelievable ability in maths, but when he has no money to pay for the bills, his maths teacher (Kevin Spacey) introduces him to blackjack and Las Vegas. All goes well until Ben gets greedy.
