Arctic Tale (PG)
Starring Queen Latifah
From the producers of MARCH OF THE PENGUINS and AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH comes this epic journey in which viewers are taken into the arctic wilderness in an exploration of what happens when the beautiful frozen world occupied by two majestic creatures gradually begins to melt away. Seela is a mother walrus thriving in the chilly waters of the Great North, and Nanu is a polar bear with curved claws that make it easy to maintain her footing on ice. As director Robertson follows these two remarkable creatures from birth through to adolescence, maturity and parenthood, viewers will bear witness to the cycle of life in a vast frozen landscape, which could pose problems for all of humankind if it continued to thaw at the current rate. The BBFC advises that ARCTIC TALE 'contains mild scenes of threat involving animals'. Further to this, City Screen would like to advise parents that the film includes several scenes of animal death that we feel may upset some young children.

Persepolis (12A)
Starring Catherine Deneuve, Chiara Mastroianni
Contains moderate violence, drugs and one use of strong language
An expressionistic animation stunningly drawn in black and white, PERSEPOLIS is a touching coming-of-age story about an intelligent, outspoken girl growing up during the Iranian revolution. Paronnaud and Satrapi’s debut feature tells of how fundamentalists seized power, forced the veil on women and imprisoned thousands of dissidents. The film is based on Satrapi’s series of graphic novels and her childhood experiences in Iran, where she survived traumatic encounters with schoolteachers bent on denying her expression, policemen determined to deny her freedom and Iraqi bombs intended to take her life. Dedicated to the people of Iran, PERSEPOLIS is a moving, universally appealing story of one woman’s struggle against oppression that deservedly shared the jury prize at Cannes in 2007.

Honeydripper (PG)
Starring Charles Dutton, Danny Glover, Gary Jr
From American indie leading light Sayles (MATEWAN, LONE STAR) comes a typically intelligent and beautifully crafted tale covering the birth of rock and roll and the coming to dominance of the electric guitar in the American South of the 1950s. Tyrone (Glover) is the proprietor of the Honeydripper juke joint. When business at the once-popular club begins to tail off and Tyrone hires unpredictable electric guitarist Sonny (guitar protégé Gary Clark Jr) against his better judgment, his last-ditch bid to draw in crowds during harvest time has surprising results that neither he nor the ambitious Sonny could have ever anticipated. Delamu (Angel of Peace) (PG)
A remarkable documentary that follows the highest and most perilous of the world's ancient trading routes, the Tea-Horse Road that climbs from Western Yunnan through the Himalayas into Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan. For more than 2000 years, tea was carried through the mountains on mules. DELAMU follows this traditional route, mixing spectacularly beautiful images of the wild mountains (as you would expect from the director of HORSE THIEF) with interviews with the inhabitants of the remote villages along the way. Amongst the mountain people are a Nua woman of 104, a young Tibetan who shares a wife with his older brother, and a Christian pastor from the Lisu tribe. A vision of a remote corner of the world and of its people that is rich in wonder.

Back to Normandy (NC)
Nicolas Philibert's follow-up to ÊTRE ET AVOIR sees him embark on a geographical/chronological journey that embraces both the political and the personal. In 1975, Philibert assisted director René Allio on a film inspired by Michel Foucault's book, Moi, Pierre Rivière..., about a murder that took place in the 1830s; his work included finding and persuading local farming folk to act in the film. Three decades on, he returned to Normandy to catch up with those people. From this simple conceit, Philibert develops an extraordinary wealth of interrelated themes - memory, history, crime, motivation, madness, family ties, rural life, different kinds of documentation, the cinema - in a film that is wonderfully warm, wise, funny and philosophical. A work of great understatement, modesty and discretion, it is also, by the end, extremely moving.

You, the Living (15)
Starring Elisabeth Helander, Bjorn Englund, Jessika Lundberg
YOU, THE LIVING follows a similar approach to Andersson's previous SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR, but takes a slightly lighter tone in presenting a wry series of tragi-comic vignettes from modern life. We meet a motley crew of characters: a stout depressive and her long-suffering husband; a girl with an unrequited crush on a musician; an Arab barber taking sweet revenge on a racist customer... If none of these sound intrinsically funny, they certainly become so when filtered through Andersson's world view that is specifically Nordic yet strangely universal. His skill lies in revealing the absurd details of what people around us do every day, the precision in his filmmaking giving added comic impact to the sheer randomness of much of what we see.

Garage (18)
Starring Anne-Marie Duff, Pat Shortt, Conor Ryan
GARAGE weaves tragedy with comedy to present a beautifully drawn tale from the margins of contemporary rural Irish life. Regarded by his neighbours as a harmless misfit, Josie (Shortt) has spent all his adult life as the caretaker of a crumbling petrol station. One summer his world suffers a shift when a teenager, David (Ryan), comes to work with him. Initially performing their menial tasks in silence, they tentatively open up, and suddenly Josie is drinking cans by the railway tracks with the local kids. This awakens dormant needs in Josie, leading to his awkward tilt at intimacy with shop girl Carmel (Duff). Tender though never sentimental, this tautly scripted, naturalistically photographed film withstands comparison to the work of the Dardenne brothers.
