Restaurant Reviews

Bangkok House

Date: 20 January 2008

“ Four of us had a superb meal on 18th January, opting for their Menu D. This provided a wide variety of dishes of sufficient quantity to satisfy most appetites. We chose a white house wine which was nicely chilled and very refreshing, priced at £9.00. The service was polite, friendly and attentive without being in any way overbearing. Our stay lasted about two hours and really it was quite a memorable evening and we would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant to our friends.”

“We visited Bangkok House after hearing and reading good things, what a shock!

On entry the restaurant looks impressive with lovely furniture and decor. We were shown very pleasantly to our table, and shortly ordered our food and wine.

We soon received our starters - a selection including rubbery fishcakes bought in pastry wrapped prawns and a disgusting battered chicken wing amongst other revolting bites. We hoped things were to improve, sadly not. We soon received a rather bland Green Chicken Curry with raw courgette and peas, a burnt Beef Massaman Curry, revolting sticky over cooked battered Sweet and Sour Squid and some rather nasty over cooked Pad Thai.

Thai food is one of my favorite cuisines but I have never tasted such revolting Thai food in my life.

The wine cost us £16.00, although from the taste I doubt if in reality it cost the restaurant much more than £2.00.

A final warning - do not order coffee. I received something that tasted like petrol but at least it removed the taste of the revolting food I had just been served.”

‘I went to Bangkok House with my friend for the Lunch special this week, and found that although the food was delicious, the service was unacceptably rude, and left a bad taste in the mouth. We ordered our meals, and my friend ordered tap water. When it came with ice, my friend asked for it without ice, and the server (who it turned out was the owner) actually said “Oh you should have said while ordering” in an extremely rude tone. The water was delivered by one of the wait-staff, but she comes back later to say (to my friend who had ordered her meal without rice because she is diabetic) “Oh, you will have to pay for the whole meal” (again in an unpleasant tone) - totally implying that we were some cheap skates who were trying to cheat her of her income! The waiter, picking his queue from the owner obviously, also acted like it was a tremendous imposition when we asked for salt and pepper later.

All in all, we suggest if you want to enjoy your meal without a bitter after-taste that you go somewhere else.

Fortunately for those who love Thai food as we do, there are other good Thai restaurants in Oxford!’

‘Consistently the best Thai food in Oxford. Great food, service and atmosphere. No one else comes close.’
