East Oxford Farmers’ Market
The East Oxford Farmers’ & Community Market is a small, friendly local market which can provide the staples for your weekly shop, all from sources within 30 miles of Oxford: bread, eggs, milk, vegetables, cheese, various meats, refills for cleaning supplies - as well as a range of other products such as jewellery, clothing and secondhand books. It has been running since August 2006, and is a non-profit making organisation, run by a committee and a group of volunteers. We are passionate about the market and what it sells. We actively source food from within 30 miles of Oxford and encourage community stalls run by local residents. We also offer Fairtrade produce from further afield and try to make sure it comes to us by land or ship. The market has a cafe which runs each week selling delicious breakfasts, lunches, cakes and fair-trade teas and coffee. This is a lovely place to meet up and take a break from shopping.

ANHSO Meeting - A tour of the planets and beyond in search of life - Dr Roland Young
At the turn of the 20th century beliefs about the planets included artificial canals on Mars and verdant plant life on Venus. A century later, we are the first generation in human history to possess adequate technological capabilities such that answering the question of life beyond Earth is a realistic possibility in our lifetimes. Dr Young will discuss our exploration of the planets and other bodies in the Solar System, particularly focusing on the search for life, and efforts to search for life elsewhere in the Un iverse such as SETI and space telescopes like NASA’s Kepler, which is currently looking for Earth-like planets around other stars. Dr Young is a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics, part of the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on understanding the atmospheres of the Solar System’s giant planets, which he studies with the aid of sophisticated numerical models and observations from spacecraft.

Film Screening and Q&A
The film screening of Shut Up and Play the Hits at Phoenix Picturehouse will be followed by a satellite Q&A with James Murphy.
On 2 April 2011, LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that it would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold-out, near four-hour extravaganza achieved just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with New York magazine calling the event “a marvel of pure craft” and Time magazine lamenting “we may never dance again.” Shut Up and Play the Hits is both a narrative film documenting this once-in-a-lifetime performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision.

The Young Atheist’s Handbook: Science vs Religion in the Classroom
Talk led by Alom Shaha, who is the speaker at Skeptics in the Pub this month, held at Copa of Oxford, George Street.
How can children brought up in religious families reconcile the different ‘truths’ they are told about the world? And to what extent should we discuss these issues in schools: what exactly should science teachers say when asked about the ‘truth’ of science by religious students? In this talk, Alom Shaha will describe his personal experiences growing up in a Bangladeshi Muslim community in London, what role his science education played in his journey towards atheism and how, as a Physics teacher, he responds to the apparent conflict between science and religion in the classroom.

Film Screening and Q&A
‘Lawless’ will be followed by a satellite Q&A with director John Hillcoat and singer-songwriter-screenwriter Nick Cave, who wrote the film script.
After collaborating on the 2005 western The Proposition, acclaimed director John Hillcoat and legendary singer-songwriter-screenwriter Nick Cave return with a tough Prohibition-set western about a family of hard-as-nails Ohio bootleggers at war with the law and rival gangsters. Boasting an all-star cast and standout performances, from man of the moment Tom Hardy as the monosyllabic heavy with a heart Forrest Bondurant and Guy Pearce as the psychotic lawman Charley Rakes, Lawless is a hard-edged, darkly funny delight from breathless start to brutal finish.
After the film screening at Phoenix Picturehouse, there will be a satellite Q&A with John Hillcoat and Nick Cave.

Film Screening: Come and See
Come and See is widely regarded as one of the most terrifying and powerful films about war. A rare view of World War II from a Soviet perspective, the film is based on the experiences of Ales Adamovich, who fought with the Russian partisans in Belarus in 1943. It is a brilliantly affecting study of the cause and effect of brutality.
Dir. Elem Klimov, Soviet Union, 1985, 136 mins.
Chosen by Jenny Saville and shown at Modern Art Oxford.

Film Screening and Q&A
For 66 months, Nigel survived under the radar of social services. This is a dark, lonely and often dangerous place to inhabit. Eventually, Nigel found Robbie, a violent Glaswegian, who, in the absence of anyone else, became his carer. Together they lived in poverty in the midst of the dreaming spires of Oxford.
Shot over a 6 year period, this film chronicles the complex relationship between the two men. Alcohol, mental illness and sex all play a part and the film raises many difficult questions about the nature of love, abuse and society’s duty of care. But at its core, this film is a love story, an acutely observed portrait of a dysfunctional relationship within a dysfunctional world.
We are delighted to welcome director James Bluemel along to the Phoenix Picturehouse for a Q&A following the film

Artur Domoslawski on Ryszard Kapuscinski
On Thursday 20th September, comes an event about one of the most influential journalists of the twentieth century. Polish journalist and writer, Ryszard Kapuscinski, was a fearless investigator with an enormous range to his curiosity. His reporting took him from postcolonial Africa, to revolutionary Iran and the military dictatorships of Latin America and Soviet Russia. His prominent work during the Cold War even warranted the attentions of the CIA. Our speaker, Artur Domoslawski, has been allowed unprecedented access to the personal papers of his longtime mentor, and as such has written a candid and exhaustive biography of this most charismatic of characters. Join us at Blackwell’s Bookshop to celebrate Kapuscinski’s life and works for what promises to be an illuminating evening.
