Times are tough at the moment, and the city is full of poor students, so where are the best places to eat in Oxford for under a tenner? Here are the editor's choices:
1. Manos Fresh Food Bar, 105 Walton Street, Oxford, OX2 6EB
This authentic Greek cafe and deli in Jericho is well worth a visit for a quick bite. There is plenty of seating, with tables on the ground level, out in the lovely courtyard garden, and downstairs in the dining room. Everything is freshly made, and they even sell hard to find kitchen staples like Orzo and good quality Feta Cheese. There are daily blackboard specials and excellent take-away lunch deals.
2. Nosebag, 6-8 St. Michaels Street Oxford OX1 2DU
One of Oxford’s longest established independent restaurants; St Michaels Street simply would not be the same without the Nosebag. Serving the best soups in Oxford, always piping hot and very filling. Other specialities include homemade casseroles, a good range of vegetarian options, and a scrumptious selection of cakes.
3. Mission Mexican Grill, 8 St. Michaels Street Oxford OX1 2DU / 2 King Edward Street Oxford OX1 4HS
Whether you’re hitting the High Street for some shopping, or having dinner with friends before a film, come to The Mission. Perch on a stool and watch the world go by, roll up your sleeves and enjoy some fast food that’s much more than a meal!
4. Vaults Cafe & Gardens, University Church of St Mary the Virgin Radcliffe Square Oxford OX1 4AH
Possibly the most stunning location in the city, the Vaults cafe offers healthy cooking using a wide range of seasonal, organic and fair trade produce.
5. Greens Cafe, 50 St Giles Oxford, OX1 3LU
A local coffee shop with lots of seating upstairs and free WiFi. Whether you want a hot bacon roll on your way to lectures or are sharing a pot of tea and a slice of cake with that special someone, this is the perfect place. Their menu of freshly made sandwiches, soups and salads, cookies, ice-cream, pastries and cakes, jacket potatoes, bagels, fruit, smoothies and milkshakes, and hot dishes is available all day, every day. All their meat and cheeses are sourced locally. Most of their foods are free range and organic, and the coffee is Fairtrade.
